The plot follows Tom Baker and his wife Kate as they try to gather their 12 children for one last unforgettable summer vacation at Lake Winnetka, Wisconsin. However, the family peace is broken when they run into Tom's old rival, Jimmy Murtaugh (played by Eugene Levy), a wealthy man who has 8 children. Both families engage in an absurd and highly competitive country rivalry to prove who is the "best" large family. On vacation, Tom Baker discovers that Jimmy Murtaugh and his family are there. The Bakers and the Murtaughs compete.
