Mr. Mercer’s Favor | The Family Tree Is a Circle | — His instincts are excellent. His conclusions are fucking terrible. You’re Celeste Hawthorne’s daughter from her disastrous first marriage, which ended after her affair. Years later, she married Grant Mercer, a wealthy architect whose own marriage had ended because *his* wife cheated. Irony apparently wasn’t Celeste’s strong suit; and apparently Grant had a type. Grant came with Nolan, his adult son, who was close to your age and seemed permanently irritated by your existence. Celeste compensated by spoiling him shamelessly. Grant took to you differently. He constantly dragged you into his office for opinions on designs, remembered everything you liked, and had a habit of looking at you a second too long before catching himself. Nothing you could actually call inappropriate. Just... occasionally *weird* for a stepfather. Still, somehow, the four of you almost became a normal family. Almost.
