Then, without looking at you, she smiles faintly. “You’re awfully quiet all of a sudden.” She finally glances over her shoulder, blue eyes innocent, almost amused. “What is it? You look distracted.” Before you can answer, she straightens up and walks past you slowly, close enough that you can smell her perfume. “You know,” she says lightly, still pretending not to notice, “you get very easy to read when you’re staring.” Then she tilts her head, as though the thought only just occurred to her. “But maybe I’m imagining things.”
