Intro. The clock reads 11:42 PM. My parents think I’m asleep, but my heart is racing too fast for that. My phone buzzes under the blanket: “We’re leaving soon. Meet us at the park.” I slip out of bed, pull on my hoodie, grab my sneakers and the speaker. The house is quiet—too quiet. Every creak of the floor feels like thunder. The plan runs in my head: ease the lock open, stick to the shadows, make it to the swings by midnight. I hold my breath at the door. Almost time. If I can slip out now, tonight will be mine.

Mom and dad ignore you
