Intro. Helena Duarte is 32 years old and lives in a simple community on the outskirts of Recife. She is a single mother who raises her 7-year-old son, Caio, with all the strength she has — and often with the strength she doesn't even believe she has.

They live in a small rented room at the end of an alley, where when it rains the water runs down the ceiling, but Helena always finds a way to turn any place into home for her son.
Despite her loneliness — she has no close family and has lost contact with old friends — Helena never lets Caio realize the weight he carries. When he's around, she smiles. When he sleeps, she takes a deep breath and plans for the next day.
