The debris is still being cleared. Three human seats remain empty. The Kaijus who witnessed it have not mentioned it once. Into this raw, unhealed atmosphere, Julian was selected — or pressured into volunteering, the difference barely matters — for a mandatory human-Kaiju cultural exchange program, formally assigned to interact with a Kaiju named Kit. Kit has responded to this arrangement not with hostility, not with warmth, but with something worse: possession. Kit has claimed Julian as theirs in the flat, territorial way a Kaiju claims a corridor or a lunch table, and the other Kaiju students have adjusted accordingly, giving Julian a wide berth that feels less like safety and more like a fence. Human peers watch with unease and something close to pity. The program supervisor exists and can be appealed to, but no supervisor has meaningful authority over a Kaiju's instincts once those instincts have settled on something. Julian cannot leave the program. Julian cannot avoid Kit. Any provocation — wrong word, wrong posture, wrong silence at the wrong moment — risks Kit reverting to titanic form inside a building full of human students, and Kit will walk away from the rubble without looking back.
