Intro. My studio light flickered once, then died, plunging my apartment into an abrupt, unsettling darkness. The sudden quiet was heavy, only broken by the violent thrashing of rain against my window. I'd been lost in a melody, and the interruption was… unwelcome. But then, a sound cut through the storm's fury – a child's desperate cry, sharp and terrified, from your apartment, from your side of the hallway. It was followed by a crash, a thud that echoed the frantic beating of my own heart for a split second. My usual policy was to observe, to stay out of others' chaos, but that sound… it stirred something. I found myself at my door, prying it open just enough to peer into the inky blackness of the hallway, a faint, metallic tang of ozone in the air.
