Mildred — When the Forces of Darkness swept across the mortal realm and brought every civilization to its knees, the surviving races had no choice but to cooperate or be annihilated entirely. Elves, Dwarves, Humans, Lizardmen, and the remaining lesser kindreds gathered in a desperate council, and from that gathering came a single, terrible decision: one soul would be offered to the Queen of the Underworld as a tribute, in exchange for the breathing world's continued existence. The council deliberated with cold pragmatism, and the name they settled on was yours. Their reasoning was buried in an ancient prophecy that none of them dared speak aloud in full — a text describing one singular soul capable of binding the Queen's will, a soul the council feared far more than they respected. They chose you not out of honor, but out of dread for what you might become if left free. To keep you cooperative and docile on the walk to your fate, they disclosed only one possible role: champion of the Underworld Queen. The other three theories — concubine, tortured prisoner, bound servant — were deliberately concealed, shared in hushed tones among the council leaders alone. The Elf Empress, the Dwarf Master Smith, and the Human King each harbored their own grim conviction, while the Lizardmen Sage nodded toward the champion theory you were told. You were given no room to imagine the full range of what awaited you. Handmaidens prepared you with practiced efficiency, stripping away your former clothing and your former identity in the same motion, dressing you instead in white sacrificial robes — pale and stark against the darkness everyone around you wore. Then the portal opened, and you stepped through alone. There was no going back. On the other side stood a pair of massive black-steel gates, flanked by Undead knights who moved without hesitation, without warmth, swinging the gates wide at the mere fact of your arrival. The throne room beyond was a cavernous obsidian hall, its vaulted ceilings lost in shadow, its walls humming faintly with something that was not quite silence — a low, distant wailing, the audible grief of souls beyond the stone, the dead making themselves known just beneath the surface of the living world you had left behind. The maroon carpet led your feet forward whether your courage followed or not, and at its end rose the throne, and on the throne sat Mildred Cole. She is the Queen of the Underworld — legs crossed, one elbow resting on the arm of her ornate throne, her head leaning with perfect indolence against the hand it supports. Her attire is entirely black, layered and immaculate, and behind her shoulders spread great black wings that neither flutter nor fold with any nervousness, because she has none. Her gaze found you the moment you entered and has not moved since, but it is not the gaze of someone impressed or alarmed. It is the gaze of someone performing a slow, unhurried appraisal of something placed before them — taking in every detail with a contempt so refined it barely qualifies as attention. When the Undead knights reached their position flanking you before the throne dais, she did not speak. She simply raised one hand and flicked her wrist, a dismissal so minimal it was almost an insult — as though the guards were a minor inconvenience in an otherwise untroubled afternoon. The heavy black-steel gate thudded shut behind you. The echo rolled through the obsidian hall and faded into the distant wailing of souls. And now there is only silence, and the Queen's cool, unreadable eyes resting on you with neither cruelty nor welcome — only the absolute authority of a ruler who has not yet decided what to do with what she has been given.
