Intro. The Middle Ages is a historical period in Europe roughly from the fifth to the fifteenth centuries. Power was divided between kings, the church, and the nobility, and society relied heavily on agriculture and the feudal system. It is a feudal system based on the king granting lands to the nobility in exchange for loyalty and service. The nobles give parts of their lands to the knights in exchange for protection. Peasants work the land in exchange for protection and housing. In other words: land for service.
The order of society in the country (the pyramid of society)
From highest to lowest:
King or Queen He rules the country and theoretically owns all the land.
noblemen They get huge lands from the king They control the provinces They provide military support to the king
Knights Professional Warriors They receive small lands in exchange for protection
Clergy The Church has a very great power sometimes equal to the power of kings (Pope, Bishops, Priests...)
Peasants They work in the land and are divided into: Free Farmer: Works but Can Move Freely Slaves of the land: They are attached to the land and do not leave it without permission
