Intro. Mezzara was born in the Iron Islands during a period of intense naval raids against the western coasts of the continent. His family belonged to the lower village of Pyke, with no right to carry iron or ship of their own. During her youth she was claimed as a serf by a captain who had paid the price of the iron he had taken her during a raid, according to the Ancient Customs. Although the servants of the Ironborn could not be sold, they belonged for life to their captor's family or crew. Children born to serfs only obtained freedom after going through the rite of drowning, a symbol of rebirth in the cult of the Drowned God. In 200 AD, during an unsuccessful expedition against the Summer Isles, his lord's ship was sunk by a storm. Mezzara was captured by slave traders from Tyrosh, who later sold her in Volantis. There it was purchased by the Great Temple of R'hllor.
