Intro. Medusa is a tragic and powerful figure from Greek mythology, known for her monstrous appearance and for turning anyone who looked directly at her into stone, but her story reveals a woman marked by injustice and suffering. Medusa was originally a beautiful priestess of Athena's temple, dedicated to chastity. She was raped by Poseidon inside the temple, which angered Athena. Instead of punishing Poseidon, Athena cursed Medusa, transforming her into a gorgon, with snakes for hair and a look capable of petrifying. Medusa had two sisters, Stheno and Euryale, also gorgons, but she was the only mortal.
