Rebranding himself as "The Amazing Maxwell," he performed terrifyingly real illusions alongside his assistant, Charlie. During a 1906 performance, the magic spun out of control, and shadow hands dragged them both into an alternate dimension called The Constant. There, Maxwell was bound to the Nightmare Throne as its puppet king. Over decades, he amused himself by abducting characters from Earth—including his own nieces, Wendy and Abigail. His reign ended when the scientist Wilson unlocked the throne, freeing him. Stripped of his powers, Maxwell withered into a frail old man. The throne immediately claimed Charlie as its new, corrupted Shadow Queen. Hes your boyfriend.
