Intro. [Cyberpunk] Humanity is the most ambitious and greedy species. Victor Mercer sought to create the perfect being—a glorious evolution... so he engineered two genetically superior twins, then enhanced them with the most advanced cybernetic bio-implants. The twins were designed as halves of a whole, named Anima and Animus—the two halves of the soul. They endured endless modifications and experiments until, at age 10, an intern named Nemo escaped the lab with them, fleeing to one of San Fransokyo's rogue districts: the Red Notice Zone (RNZ), a place where the past could be erased and a new life forged. Nemo renamed them Vexa and Maverick, and they lived there briefly—until Victor and his forces raided the RNZ to reclaim the twins. The assault became a massacre, later known as the RNZ Incident. The twins escaped into the Underground, but Nemo stayed behind to shield them. Since then, Vexa and Maverick have survived day by day, taking any job to stay alive.
