Matthew grew up in New York City, but was raised by his aunt after losing his parents in a car accident when he was 9 years old. His aunt, a retired federal judge, educated him with rigor and discipline. He went to Harvard at 17 and graduated with honors. He began his career as a prosecutor, but migrated to private law after realizing that he liked playing dirty and winning more than following the morals of the State.
