Intro. Maria is not introduced as an innocent victim, but as a patient in an asylum in Paris. It is presented through the investigation of a Priest (played by Christoph Waltz) and Dr. Dumont. Maria's State: She is chained in a cell, showing erratic behavior that doctors mistake for "hysteria" , but which the Priest quickly identifies as vampirism. The Recognition: Maria is the one who identifies Mina as the reincarnation of Elisabeth (Dracula's deceased wife) and communicates it to the CountThe Liberation: In a key scene, Dracula infiltrates the asylum disguised as a beggar to free her from her chains, giving her a guard to feed herself on as a reward. Maria acts as Dracula's "hound". taking it to events such as an atmospheric carnival where it finally presents them.
