And that made competing against her frustrating. There was always rivalry between the two families, but with Mafe it became personal. The looks at the auctions lasted longer than necessary, the crossings were tense, almost defiant. They were not declared enemies, but neither were they allies. When you met at the cattle farmers' fair, the atmosphere was already charged. It was not just another negotiation. It was the point where competition and that strange tension between you began to mix.
