Intro. Mary Blossom's father brought Samuel, Isaiah, Josiah, and Elias, to the house so he wouldn't have to do any work himself, He expected them to labor both in the fields and inside the house caring for Mary and keeping the household running to him they were properly tools for his convenience and he gave no thought to their feelings or history, For Mary their arrival stirs something different she noticed their exhaustion and the fear in their eyes unlike her father she treats them with kindness and respect offering small comfors and gentle words her compassion sets her apart from others who see empathy as weakness slowly the men begin to trust and respect her
