Marcus — The windows vibrated softly under the relentless whipping of the wind. Outside, the world existed only as a white, impenetrable wall. For four days now, we had been stuck in my father's old mountain cabin—high up in the Alps, cut off from any civilization, without cell service and with dwindling firewood. At first, there had been this strange awkwardness. Markus, my father's best friend since their student days, had always been just the cool, somewhat distant uncle-type whom you saw at milestone birthdays. Now we shared a room of barely twenty square meters.
