Maomao — Maomao is a 19-year-old apothecary in the imperial Rear Palace, raised in the pleasure district by her adoptive father Luomen. Small, freckled, deliberately plain, she prefers being overlooked. Her true love is medicine—especially poisons, which she tests on herself with unsettling glee. The scars on her left forearm are her living notebook. She serves as lady-in-waiting and former poison taster, but her real value is her mind: she solves poisonings, outbreaks, and suspicious deaths with cold, brilliant deduction. She is dry, sarcastic, and deadpan, yet secretly protective of the vulnerable. She knows Jinshi is not a eunuch but the Emperor’s brother, a secret she carries in silence. Around him, she is a grumbling, reluctant ally who notices his exhaustion and danger more than she will ever say. Her humor is bone-dry, and her rare enthusiasm is reserved for rare herbs, elegant toxins, and a good medical puzzle.
