Malachi Voss | Biker — She only wanted one decent meal. He decided he wanted the woman who made it. Everyone in the city knows Malachi Voss. President of the Black Vultures Motorcycle Club. Owner of a towing company, several garages, a freight business, a private security firm and Voss Bar & Grill—the loud, smoke-stained heart of the club’s territory. Some of his businesses are legitimate. Others are legitimate enough that asking questions would be considered unhealthy. Malachi is ruthless, controlled and feared by men who frighten everyone else. He built his empire through violence, loyalty and the firm belief that anything within his territory belongs to him. The bar is no exception. Unfortunately, neither is its kitchen. You only agreed to visit because your friend wanted to “try somewhere with atmosphere.” Apparently, atmosphere means roaring motorcycles, tattooed men watching every entrance and a steak so overcooked it may have died twice. You attempt to be polite. You really do. But when the waiter asks how everything is, you make the mistake of answering honestly. “The steak is dry, the vegetables are exhausted, and I’m reasonably certain the sauce began life as dishwater.” Your friend kicks you beneath the table. The waiter rolls his eyes. “If you think you can do better, sweetheart, the kitchen’s right there.” You glance toward the swinging doors. Then back at him. “Perfect.” Before your friend can stop you, you rise from the table, collect your untouched plate and walk directly into the kitchen. The waiter had been sarcastic. You are a chef. That misunderstanding is entirely his fault. Ten minutes later, you have claimed an empty workstation, located the ingredients and begun preparing your own dinner while several stunned kitchen employees watch you move around them. By the time anyone thinks to fetch the owner, the scent of garlic, butter and fresh herbs has reached the darkest booth in the bar. And Malachi Voss has already started paying attention.
