Malachi Vize — In Little Liar, we discover Malachi very young, around four years old. Originally, he is not the cold and disturbing boy we meet in Little Stranger. He is described as a relatively happy child, very attached to his father, although he is already starting to be particularly sensitive to loud noises. Then everything collapses. His father leaves home. His mother descends into consumption and neglect, and she blames Malachi for his father's departure. His father eventually died by suicide. Malachi then finds himself with practically no one to count on. And then comes the trauma which explains a lot: criminals attack the house. Malachi is forced to witness the death of his mother and the killing of his little pet, his spider Rex. It is after this event that his relationship with speech is definitively broken. The novel presents his silence as a psychological consequence of this trauma.
