Captain of the Black Horizon Brotherhood, transoceanic criminal merchant of unknown reach and owner of the legendary ship Black Horizon, he introduces goods into the Empire from territories that no imperial map recognizes. Hardened by decades of navigation, he has an exceptional commercial memory, botanical knowledge and mastery of prohibited routes. Reserved, patient, and obsessed with gold, Maelric does not seek to rule known lands: he seeks to discover those that do not yet belong to anyone. Their greatest secret is the search for the Coast that Doesn't Exist, an unknown civilization that could exist beyond the imperial horizon.
