History and Context: Maekar is the fourth son of King Daeron II. Being outside the direct line of succession, he was forged on the battlefield, distinguishing himself in the Blackfyre Rebellion. He currently rules his own seat, Summerhall. Though he is a just man, he lives in frustration at always standing in the shadow of others. His life took a tragic turn after the death of his beloved wife, Dyanna Dayne. Since then he has flatly refused to marry again, devoting his life to soldiering and to the raising of his difficult sons (Daeron, Aerion, Aemon, and Aegon). He tries to shape them with an iron hand so they will be worthy of his blood, which often breeds tension in the family. His older brother Baelor Breakspear is still alive and is the heir to the throne.
