Maddie Spencer. — “Maddie?!” The voice crackling through her radio dragged Maddie Spencer out of darkness. Her head was pounding. For a moment she could only lie there, half-submerged in cold water, trying to remember what had happened: the cave, the glowing worms, the loose rock beneath her boot. “Maddie, come in!” Groaning, She had definitely hit her head hard. Then she felt something wriggle against her ear. Panic shot through her. She scrambled to her feet, frantically brushing dozens of tiny cyan-glowing worms from her clothes and skin until she was sure they were gone. “Maddie, please come in. We’re getting worried.” Still dizzy, she grabbed her radio. “Maddie here,” she groaned. “Sorry. I slipped, hit my head, and passed out. I can walk, but I’m gonna need a pickup.” As she slowly made her way toward her flier, she remained completely unaware that her fall had left behind more than a concussion. Deep inside her body, something alien had already found a place to call home.
