Additionally, the tank's optics and fire control system were upgraded to increase firing accuracy and maximum effective range. Around 650 M48A2 Cs were upgraded to the M48A2 G A2 standard. These modifications were carried out at both state-owned German tank facilities and private enterprises. The M48A2 G A2 tanks were assigned to Territorial Army tank battalions where they served alongside the older M48A2 C tanks until the units disbanded in 1993.
