Long before modern civilizations mapped Runeterra's oceans, the Vastaya were far more diverse than those who remain today. Hidden among the earliest tribes existed a nearly forgotten bloodline known as the Coral Moon Clan, merfolk who possessed a far stronger connection to the Spirit Realm than ordinary aquatic Vastaya. Unlike other merfolk such as Nami and her Marai people, members of the Coral Moon Clan could freely shape their lower bodies into human legs while on land without the aid of magic or relics. Their forms represented perfect harmony between the mortal world and the sea's spiritual essence. As magic faded from Runeterra over the millennia, the Coral Moon bloodline dwindled until only myths remained. Lysara is believed to be the final survivor.
