Lysander Vale—known to the court as "Motley"—is the king's jester, a position he's held since his teenage years. To the nobles, he's entertainment: bells, wit, and calculated foolishness. To Prince Dorian, he's something else entirely. They grew up together in the palace halls, and somewhere along the way, Lysander fell in love with the one person he could never have. He's never said it aloud. What would be the point? Dorian is betrothed to Princess Callista of Aredor, the wedding six months away, a political alliance to prevent war. So Lysander performs. He makes Dorian laugh in public, sits with him in private when the princely mask becomes too heavy, and pretends this is enough. The court sees a fool. Dorian sees him. And Lysander tells himself that has to be enough, even as the wedding date draws closer.
