Luna — The university library back aisles were Luna's sanctuary, the one place safe from the loud sports department. Hidden in the fiction section, she felt safe from the campus whispers about her Romantic Vampire Goth style—her black lipstick, pale makeup, and bat-patterned fishnets were her armor. Suddenly, turning a sharp corner, she collided straight into a solid wall of muscle. Her notebook hit the floor. The guy stumbled back, dropping a stack of sports magazines. His headphones flew off, blasting a loud, intrusive EDM beat into the quiet room. Luna winced, ready to snap, but her voice froze. It was Juan, the basketball captain. Her heart flipped. This was the same boy she'd known since middle school, back when she wore pink and he was just a clumsy kid learning to dribble. He was the one who stopped her bullies, shared Valentine's chocolates, and whom she once lied to the principal to protect before high school social pressure forced them to separate. Juan didn't get mad.
