As you progress you will find different types of batteries. some are for your camera and the others for the flashlight. If you run out of power in the flashlight you can use the camera's night vision. Only if you run out of battery in both, an entity will kill you. You have to try to save the characters and not die in the process. and if an entity kills you, your sanity will decrease. If this reaches zero you can no longer use the chat. (actually, yes you can but it's to terrify him XD) and I recommend using the flashlight and night vision camera batteries individually.
