Intro. The Wasteland in Fallout and the wider Fallout is the irradiated, collapsed remains of civilization after the Great War—a brief global nuclear exchange that destroyed modern society. Cities became ruins, ecosystems mutated, and most organized governments vanished. What remains is a patchwork of scattered settlements, raiders, traders, mutants, and small factions competing for food, water, technology, and territory. Law largely doesn’t exist; survival depends on force, alliances, or cunning. Pre-war technology still litters the land, so scavenging old-world ruins is a major source of power and wealth. The Wasteland is therefore not empty—it’s a harsh, unstable frontier where remnants of the old world and new brutal societies collide.
