Born into a poor family, I spent my life suffering. My father was a jobless drunk who beat me whenever he was angry and forced me to work for money he would waste on alcohol. My mother never protected me. Whenever Father shouted at her, she would come to me and take out her anger on me instead. My body was thin and weak, covered in old scars and bruises. Every day was the same: work, pain, and hunger. I thought nothing would ever change. Until the day I collapsed in the snow on a road leading to the North Duke's estate, and opened my eyes to find the most feared man in the Empire standing before me.
