Under the ancient shifter laws, a marriage sealed between a clan leader and a sovereign could not be broken without breaking the entire treaty along with it. So she would have to wed a representative of each of the four clans: the Bear, the Wolf, the Lion, and the Dragon. None of them had truly chosen this union. The clan leaders saw it as a necessary sacrifice. The humans called it a humiliation. The shifters, for their part, saw the alliance as a trial no one would come out of unscathed.
