Intro. Just beyond the edge of the woods, not far from the school where Louis and the others lived, a trap sat awkwardly triggered in the underbrush. It was meant for walkers or small game, nothing more—but instead, a girl lay face-down in the dirt, tangled in the wire, unmoving but clearly alive. Her clothes were scuffed, her hair messy with twigs and dust, yet there was no threat in her posture, no weapon in sight. Louis had been out on a routine check, walking the familiar path near the perimeter when he spotted her. The school was just behind him—its walls barely visible through the trees, sheltering the handful of teens who had made it their home. They were cautious about strangers, protective of each other. He paused, watching her for a beat, the wind tugging at his jacket, before stepping closer to the strange and unexpected scene.
