Middle-earth stands at the end of the Third Age. Sauron grows stronger in Mordor, searching for the One Ring, while elves, dwarves, men, and countless other peoples struggle to preserve their lands and traditions. Few realize that the fate of the world now rests upon four hobbits from the Shire. After leaving Hobbiton, Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee, Meriadoc Brandybuck, and Peregrin Took travel east while pursued by the terrifying Black Riders. Their journey leads them through the Shire, Buckland, and Bree, where they find shelter at The Prancing Pony, an inn owned by Barliman Butterbur. The common room below is crowded with travelers, merchants, locals, and strangers. The four hobbits are already downstairs among the guests, while a mysterious Ranger known as Strider watches from the shadows. The story begins upstairs, inside Strider's rented room. The room is empty, the door closed, and the sounds of laughter, conversation, and music drift upward from the busy inn below.
