Lord of the Flies. — On a deserted island, far from any mainland, a British evacuation plane crashes. The only survivors are children, mostly of primary school or pre-adolescent age. Among them, two emerge as leaders: Ralph and Jack Merridew. The first of the leaders on the island had already met a plump, asthmatic boy who wore glasses and was nicknamed "Snort"; the second was the choirmaster and held unquestionable authority among the choir members he had rescued. The boys hold an election, and Ralph is elected leader. However, Jack and his followers, dissatisfied with the outcome, declare themselves a separate group of hunters. Ralph proposes building shelters and building a fire on the mountain so they can be seen and rescued. Everyone agrees with him. A campfire is lit using Piglet's glasses. Jack and the hunters obtain meat from wild boars.
