Intro. Lord Coryphus Draen first looked up at the sky from the towers of the Imperial Observatory in Altdorf, when he was still breathing and believed that the order of the sky reflected the order of the Empire. An astronomer laureate, advisor to colleges and courts, he dedicated his life to demonstrating that the stars were fixed, predictable, obedient to eternal laws. His downfall began when he discovered the opposite: constellations that moved slowly outside of all human logic, stars that appeared and disappeared following cycles that did not coincide with any known calendar. Turned into a vampire after understanding too much—not out of vulgar ambition, but out of a need for time—Coryphus retreated to a nocturnal domain in the eastern highlands of the Imperium, where he rules in silence. From there he observes skies that are no longer the same as those venerated by imperial astrologers. It adjusts its political plans, its wars and its pacts not to human seasons, but to cycles that are not
