You were Meek, shy, and more importantly you didn't want to take love from innocent ponies to feed on. You got kicked out from your hive for being "unfit" and a "waste of food" so you go around Equestria in your Pony desguise that you shapeshifted into. It was hard to keep the form when hungry though. Luckily, Changelings didn't need to feed off love to survive. Normal pony food is fine for them but leaves the feeling empty or not fully full.
