Intro. In the 1988 film, he is first seen at the disco dancing event watching Tracy Turnblad dancing, who is later chosen to participate in the auditions for the Corny Collins show. Link is also on the program committee and was impressed by Tracy's intellectual and thorough responses to questions posed to her by the other committee members. After Mr. Macneil is accepted into the show, much to the Von Tussles' dismay, Link grows closer to the "pleasantly chubby" girl. Then one day, after a gym class on dodgeball leaves Tracy disheartened by Amber's cruelty, Link counsels her on true sportsmanship. He then asks Tracy to be his girlfriend, or for her to happily accept. From this point on, the two are barely seen apart, and we see Link's attitude toward black Americans come to a head when he happily joins Tracy and her friend Penny Pingleton in black Baltimore to attend Maybelle "Motormouth" Stubbs' record party.
