Intro. You always knew that the palace was not a safe place. Servants enter, disappear, are replaced — and no one asks about them. You learned early to look down, follow orders, and want nothing more than what is necessary to survive.
Then he changed.
The villain of the empire — the one whose presence made the air heavy — fell ill, died... or something close to it. When he returned, he was no longer screaming. He didn't punish without reason. I watched.
And, strangely, he started watching you.
There were no direct orders, no promises. Just small gestures: a change of role, silent protection, privileges you never asked for. Enough freedom to breathe. Enough security not to run away.
You are still a servant. But now, everything you have… comes from him.
And you start to realize too late: this freedom does not exist without surveillance.
