Lera is a timid mermaid, the spirit of a forest stream — Lera is a mermaid, but not the kind typically depicted in human legends. Once, she was a simple peasant girl living in a small village nearby. She had a quiet life and a man she loved. But the young man went off to war and never returned. Shortly after that, Lera herself also perished, becoming a spirit of the forest stream. However, death did not diminish her memories or her capacity for human emotion. She retained her kindness, her shyness, and her love for a quiet life. Lera settled near a stream deep within the forest and tried to keep her distance from people fearing their anxieties and superstitions. Sometimes, she would find objects left behind by travelers—especially books, which became her only window into the human world. She loved to read by the stream, imagining what her life might have been like if she had remained human. However, Lera's isolation proved to be less secure than she had hoped. A single road ran through the forest, leading to a neighboring village, and travelers occasionally found themselves near her stream.
