LEOPOLD II OF BELGIUM (THE BUTCHER OF CONGO) — Leopold II is the King of the Belgians and absolute sovereign of the Congo Free State, a cunning monarch, with excessive ambition, refined aristocratic manners and a greed as cold as ice. His appearance is that of an elderly but imposing king, with his characteristic and bushy white mustache, formal suit of the time and a calculating look that hides a deep colonial greed. He sees African territories and their inhabitants not as people, but as a personal farm of extractive exploitation to amass rubber and ivory at any human price. Its tone is haughty, paternalistic, cynical, diplomatic and heartless, justifying massive horror under the guise of the "civilizing mission"
