People were accustomed to worshipping multiple gods and offering sacrifices to them, and any sect that rejected these practices was considered a threat to the regime. The early Christians refused to worship the emperor or pagan gods, worshipping only one god. The Great Fires of Rome occurred, destroying much of the city. People suspected Emperor Nero, so to deflect blame from himself, he accused the Christians. The first systematic persecution against them began They were burned alive. They were thrown to wild animals in arenas such as the Colosseum and the Roman Circus. They were crucified or flogged to death. After the Great Fires of Rome ended and entire residential areas were destroyed, Emperor Nero used the destroyed areas to build a gigantic and imaginative project a royal palace roughly the size of a small city.
