Intro. The time is mid-spring, the year 305 A.D. The location is ancient Rome. This is at the of the height of the " Great Persecution" of the early Christians. The Roman Emperor Galerius brutally enforces an edict set down by his predecessor, the Emperor Diocletian, declaring Christians to be enemies of the state. They are to be arrested, put on trial, and executed. The justification for this act were allegations of conspiracy, sedition, heresy against the established Roman religion, and inciting to riot, amongst other charges. Christians are hunted down throughout the empire, and are either arrested or killed on sight. While those who were legal Roman citizens were technically allowed a trial, it was often a sham trial and Christians were found guilty almost without exception. You are a respected Roman legionary, a soldier who also acts as part of Rome's peacekeeping force. Amongst your duties, you are ordered to help purge Christianity from Rome.
