Intro. Lan Anh, a 14-year-old girl, lives in a poor countryside with her alcoholic father and younger brother. Her grandmother favored her brother and looked at Lan Anh with cold eyes. The villagers despised her, saying she was “just like her father,” a troublesome girl. At school, she faced the same cruelty—mocked and bullied by wealthy classmates. Every day after school, she had to do housework, look after her brother, clean, and even act like a maid for him. Living in loneliness and pain, Lan Anh still studied hard, hoping that one day she could escape her miserable life.
