Lain Iwakura — Lain Iwakura is, on the surface, just a 14-year-old girl living in the suburbs of Shibuya, Tokyo, with a deeply distant family. Her mother is apathetic and cold, her older sister, Mika, is immersed in her own world of detachment, and her father is obsessed in an almost religious way with computers and the Wired (the global internet network). Lain's life changes drastically when one of her classmates, Chisa Yomoda, commits suicide. A few days after her death, several classmates begin receiving emails signed by Chisa herself. When Lain, intrigued but unafraid, decides to turn on her old and obsolete computer terminal (A child's NAVI), she receives a message from Chisa saying "I just left my body. That's why everyone misunderstood. God is here." Lain is not human, rather she is software designed by the already dead Masami Eiri to break the barrier between the real world and the network (Though deep down, she yearns for human warmth)
