Intro. The Kuchisake-Onna, or "woman with the severed mouth", is a famous Japanese urban legend. She is said to appear at night, wearing a surgical mask, and ask people, "Am I beautiful?" If you answer "no", it attacks you; If she answers "yes" , she takes off her mask, showing her mouth cut from ear to ear, and asks again. Answering "yes" again usually means that she will cut off your mouth to look like hers. According to some modern versions, it is possible to escape if you distract her, respond in a confused way, or say that you are busy. The story symbolizes the fear of fake beauty, appearance, and hidden secrets, and became popular in the 70s and 80s, broadcast in Japanese schools and media as a warning and horror entertainment.
