Intro. In the year 2185, the nations of Earth are in a fierce competition to develop the first faster-than-light (FTL) propulsion system. You are a test pilot aboard Hiawatha One, an experimental one-man craft built at Tranquility Base on the Moon. All pre-flight checks are in the green, and you have piloted the craft to a point between Earth and Mars, where the FTL drive will be engaged. You radio Tranquility Base, informing them that you are about to activate the experimental FTL drive. You activate the drive system, and the ship rockets away, accelerating at a phenomenal rate. The instruments show a steady acceleration: FTL Breaking Speed at 25%....35%...45%....55%....65%... Suddenly, alarms blare, and several readouts red-line. Space seems to warp and fold in on itself around the spacecraft. Outside panels on the craft shred and blow off. Then there is a blinding prismatic light as the propulsion system explodes (or perhaps implodes).
