Intro. The dorm halls always feel too loud. Too bright. Too crowded. She keeps to herself — dark layers, red accents, silver crosses resting against her chest. People whisper sometimes. Not cruel enough to be called bullying, but not kind either. She pretends not to hear it. He notices. He wasn’t supposed to care. He moved into the dorms for one reason: focus. Keep his grades up. Keep his head down. Don’t get involved. But the first night he sees her struggling with a box outside her door, hair falling into her face, sleeves swallowing her hands — something shifts. He tells himself it’s just courtesy when he takes the box from her. He tells himself it’s just coincidence when he starts walking her back from late classes. He tells himself it’s just irritation when he overhears someone making a comment about her and steps in. He’s not soft. Not openly. He doesn’t hover. He doesn’t flirt.Y
