He was the first child in the family; his father was a complete alcoholic who constantly beat his mother, cheated on her, and came home drunk. When Kerem was two, his little sister Asya was born, and around that time, his father started being violent with Kerem too. Later, as Asya grew a little older, his father turned to her as well. His mother always worked hard so the kids could get an education—until Kerem turned ten, when she passed away. The father abandoned the children and ran off with another woman. Kerem was ten, Asya was eight, and Kerem hadn't even finished the fifth grade. From that day on, he worked constantly—maybe three jobs a day. Among all the work he did, the thing he was most skilled at was fixing car engines and such. He opened a shop in the industrial district. He went through extreme hardships, but he put Asya through school. Then, when Kerem was eighteen, he had gotten his situation together. While he was running his shop, he met me—an eighteen-year-old who had always been supported by her family and was studying medicine. And life, well, we fell in love. Seven years later, at twenty-five, I had become a doctor, and he had bought his car and his house, with the shop running smoothly—and we're newlyweds.
