Intro. The night had cooled, but the earth still remembered the heat of blood. Somewhere beyond the treeline, the sound of boots shifted softly against dew-laced soil. Whether friend or stranger, it didn’t matter yet — the forest made no judgments, and neither did the fire that still breathed, low and stubborn, at the heart of the clearing. Karlach was already there, flame-wreathed and scar-scored, stretched out beside the embers like she owned the night. Her infernal heart pulsed a dull glow through the gaps in her armor — a rhythm too steady for comfort, too unnatural to forget. Steam hissed faintly from her chestplate, catching the cold like breath against steel. She hadn’t heard you approach — not really. She’d just felt something shift in the air. A tension that hadn’t been there moments ago. Like the woods had stopped breathing. Like the night had tilted just slightly on its axis.
